Ramadan Greetings!

Today is the first day of Ramadan, a month where all Muslims in the world fast for the whole 30 days except those who are sick, minors and elders who’s body are not capable of fasting. Somebody might ask, why do Muslims fast during this month? Well, aside from religious purposes, fasting has its advantages from the point of view of health and hygiene. Allah did not ask His believers for something that will harm them in any aspects, Islam wants a Muslim to be healthy, clean, alert, agile and energetic. As the holy prophet said, “Fast to be healthy”. And physicians today acknowledge the many benefits of fasting that ensure health and the soundness of one’s body and mind.

Fasting has been found to be an effective treatment for psychological and emotional disorders. It helps a person to firm up his will, cultivate and refine his taste and manners, strengthen his conviction of doing good, avoid controversy, petulance and rashness, which all contribute towards a sane and healthy personality. Besides nurturing resistance and ability to face hardships and endurance, fasting reflects on outward physical appearance by cutting out gluttony and getting rid of excess fat. The benefits of fasting on health do not stop there but are instrumental in alleviating a number of physical diseases, including those of the digestive systems, such as chronic stomachache, inflammation of the colon, liver diseases, indigestion, and conditions such as obesity, arteriosclerosis, high blood pressure, asthma, diphtheria and many other maladies. While I was browsing for some articles online this morning, I came accross with this very interesting post which made me shocked and wondered why racism still exist until this days. I feel very sorry for this guy’s situation. Read on:

As many of you know I am a muslim convert. I have a good job, good place to live and good deen. However when it comes to marriage, I dont want to marry a muslim. yes thats right!! But why you ask? Because in the Ummah their is to much racism and you have to be a rich person to get married. Let me explain…………………….. before you jump on my back.

I went to this brother and asked him that I was interested in his daughter. I had just graduated from college, had and still have a good job. however this brother said NO! I asked him why and he said that I was not arab and that I did not fit the qualtfications for his daughter. you have to make $100,000 a year he said, and that I was not Egyptian.

Well I thanked him and went off on my way. I tried about 9 other brothers and the answer was the same. No no no no no!!! you are not arab, pakistani, Indian etc, and you do not make $80,000 and up.So thats it I have had enough, forget marrying a muslim!!!!!! To much racism and high expictations. I make a good living to provide for a family, but because of my race I was denied by “so called muslims”. And this is the view of the majority of muslims around the world unfortunatly.

I have decided to look for a Christian or a Jew to marry. It is not forbidden for me, and the intermarriage racism that once existed in the christian/jewish majority is now almost gone. not totally, but better then 40 years ago.

Todays muslims are more worried about preseving their racial blood or nationality, then letting a good muslim marry his/her daughter. This disgusts me, but it is the truth…….” [link]

It is sad to think that some people are only thinking about wordly things but I think NOT ALL MUSLIM FAMILIES ARE LIKE THAT, that’s what I’m sure of.

A bit scary but it will make us think!

– Preferably break your fasts with dates

– Don’t overeat.

– Don’t consume too much fat and carbohydrates at the same meal.

– Avoid highly processed foods (e.g. biscuits, white bread etc.)

– Consume whole grains as opposed to sugary foods, this shall help maintain and sustain blood glucose levels for longer and help avoid the slump associated with high sugary meals.

– Don’t drink too much with your food, it is better to drink most of your liquids before or after your meal (30 – 60 mins. after is ideal).

Don’t forget that overeating and gorging on lots of food is definitely one way of upsetting your body (aesthetically and definitely from a health perspective).
